QUESTION: Can dementia, strokes & hearing loss be caused by lead?
01 Dec 2003, New South Wales Australia I was hoping you could confirm the truth or otherwise of a statement made by a clairvoyant concerning my father. He used to be involved in renovating old houses and later owned a paint factory. He ended up with dementia and died after a couple of strokes. He also had very bad hearing for many years. I was informed by the clairvoyant that my father had always been susceptible to dementia/paranoia but that it was the lead he ingested while preparing and using lead paints that pushed him over the edge. I'm writing a life story and was thinking of using this comment but was not sure how feasible/accurate it was. Many thanks, Gillian. |

| ANSWER: 02 Dec 2003 Dear Gillian, Your question gets the prize for the most unusual question I've ever had on lead and ageing. Either your clairvoyant is very well-informed on the effects of lead or s/he's clairvoyant. Luckily, my co-volunteer Alycia Bailey has just this moment completed a factsheet on Lead and Ageing (attached) also see Health Impacts of Lead Poisoning. I'd be really keen to receive a final copy of what you write and I'd web-publish the lead-related section on our website if it is not web-published somewhere else. A fascinating tale.
