QUESTION: When was lead paint banned in
Australia? 03 Aug 2004,
Western Australia
Dear Sir/Madam, I've read quite a few articles on lead paints and most websites have been saying different things. Some sites say lead paints in Australia were banned in the early 1900s and others say lead paints in Australia were banned only in the early 1980s. I'm hoping you could shed some light on the subject. Thank you for your time. Matt |

ANSWER: 11 Aug 2004
Dear Matt, Lead was phased out from 1970 onward but is still allowed in paints, in 1991, the Australian NHMRC limit for lead in paint was 0.5% for domestic use. This figure was lowered to 0.25% in March 1992 and in 1997 was further lowered to 0.1%. Volunteer, Global Lead Advice and Support Service Also see: Facts and Firsts of Lead |
