QUESTION:
Lead Test Kit from The LEAD Group, 19 Jun 2006, South Australia
Hello, We live on a property & our only water supply is from rainwater tanks. We have a colourbond roof & gutters & galvanised tanks, I just read somewhere that this is bad & can cause leeching of lead & other metals into our drinking water. Is there somewhere I can buy a testing kit for lead & aluminium or heavy metals? The other thing I wanted to ask (& it may sound silly) is when I touch some metals, i think its aluminium eg my horses pooper scoop, egg rings, my hands will have a grey lead pencil type of stuff appear. it washes of but I don't know where it comes from as the metal i touch isn't dirty at all, it seems to be coming from me? Thanks so much for your time Regards |

ANSWER: 12 Jul 2006 Dear Madam, As far as we know, (now available from The LEAD Group Do–It–Yourself Lead Safe Test Kits) we do not know any company in Australia that specifically sell a kit to test lead in water. You may want to contact Australian Waterlines at 0354426000. They might sell kits to test for lead specifically in water. However, the HybriVet in USA sells Lead Check Aqua Test Kits for spot testing of lead in tap water. The detection limit of 0.015 mg/L is unfortunately higher than the Australian guideline for lead in drinking water of 0.010 mg/L. You could ask Air Met if they will import this test kit. They already import the Lead Check Paint Test Kit. Their number is 1800000744 otherwise you can contact HybriVet at www.leadcheck.com and their number is 001115086517881 I hope this would help. About the grey stuff, there are many possibilities. It might be aluminium oxide. Regards, Erik Wibowo (Research Assistant of Global Lead Advice and Support Service) |
