QUESTION: Safety precautions for storing lead pipe prior to recycling, 09 Apr 2006, New South Wales Australia

I'm currently storing lead pipe in a shed outside, which my partner intends to dispose of but is currently away working long term, how should we be storing it? till we can dispose of it
ANSWER: 01 May 2006

Dear Rebecca,
sorry for the delay in responding but our email answering volunteer has not been in for three weeks!
The lead pipe should be kept out of the reach of children and pets and on top of plastic so that you can dispose of the plastic once the pipe is taken away for recycling. If it's not possible to keep pets and children out of the storage area then wrap the pipe securely in plastic to ensure there can be no ingestion by licking or by handling and then putting fingers/paws in the mouth etc.
Depending on where you live, you may be able to ask a scrap metal merchant to come and pick up the lead pipe. Scrap Metal Merchants are listed in the Yellow Pages.
I hope this helps.
Yours Sincerely
Elizabeth O'Brien
