QUESTION: Could my old casserole crock pot have a lead content that makes it unsafe to cook in? 06 Jul 2002, Arizona USA

I have an old casserole pan made out of crock that was made in the early 1900s. It has no coatings on it. Do you think it has a lead content that makes it unsafe to cook in? Food cooked in it tastes so good and potatoes get a wonderful crust.
Thank you.

ANSWER: 07 Jul 2002

Dear Madam,

the only way to know for sure would be to test it. You can use a spot test kit for this eg Lead Check by Hybrivet, available at US supermarkets.

Good luck - I hope it's lead free. Those potatoes sound yummy!

Yours sincerely
Elizabeth O'Brien
