Some candles have recently been found to pose a lead poisoning risk due to the use of lead cores in the wicks. There has been a federal ban on the supply of these candles which prevents their sale in the NT, and a ban on their sale in NSW (since 8/9/99), Queensland (since 17/9/99), SA (since 17/9/99) and ACT (to be announced tomorrow). Despite these bans little has been done to educate the consumer about the use of the millions of candles containing wicks with lead cores purchased prior to or since these bans were announced. Please refer to the following Media Release.
