The Community
Development Department in Cambridge, Massachusetts has received a $2.2 million grant from
the US Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD) to assist property owners in
deleading their homes. The grant will be administered by the departments
Lead-Safe
Cambridge program, initiated in October 1994. The program aims to grant funds to property
owners for lead abatement and also seeks to expand programs for temporary relocation and
offer medical and educational services to low- and moderate-income tenants. In return,
owners must agree to keep their homes affordable for five years after the abatement. City
officials said thus far, the program has assisted more than 150 households. The HUD grant
allows city officials to extend and expand the program. For more information, call 0011 1
