CTI began doing lead assessments in 1992 and has provided The LEAD Group with written instructions for those householders wishing to carry out their own lead assessments. As of October 2000, lead and other heavy metal analysis can also be carried out onsite by CTI using XRF portable equipment. Samples may also be sent to Amdel laboratories for analysis.

TAB: Fred has extensive knowledge of lead paint coatings and is a concrete and coatings specialist. He is Managing Director of CTI Consultants Pty Ltd who perform assessments for lead and a number of other environmental health hazards. Enviro Check was set up in Oct '97 to perform lead assessments including written reports. In September 2000, Enviro Check became the first commercial laboratory to gain NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) accreditation to test lead in [dry] paint in Australia. The lab was also NATA accredited to test heavy metals (cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, zinc, nickel and manganese) in soil until it closed down in mid 2002. Enviro Check is currently using Sydney Analytical Laboratories for analysis work.

Tim is the lead assessor who, in Oct '97, set up Enviro Check Analytical Laboratories (see ENVI12) and gained NATA accreditation for testing lead in paint and heavy metals in soil in Sept 2000. As at mid 2002, Tim is doing his analyses at Sydney Analytical Laboratories.

CSIRO Geological Services can assess ceiling dust or vacuum cleaner dust, either sampled by CSIRO or the client, for lead, arsenic, cadmium, copper, chromium, mercury, and zinc. Other assessments that can be done are size analysis of particles, basic optical and/or scanning electron microscopy for lead bearing particles, and lead testing of paint particles. Results approximately four weeks from receipt of sample. Samples of dust should be collected with a clean plastic spoon, scrape 3-4 teaspoons into a "new" plastic bag. Do not collect any roof insulation in the sample.

JBS have introduced a consultation fee of $130 & $50 per sample collected and $150-$250 for a detailed report. If a child in Sydney has a blood lead level (PbB) > 25 µg/dL, assessment is free!. Intrastate/interstate travel/accommodation costs need to be met. .A standard investigation (including inspection and report) of an elevated blood lead level costs $500 [this figure may be negotiable through correspondence with the managing director].

Jason Bawden-Smith is a lead assessor and Managing Director of JBS Environmental Services and Technologies. Formerly worked for the Health Department and dealt with their lead cases. He has an extensive knowledge of lead sources and management and the effects of lead on health. The cost of a full lead assessment for someone with an elevated blood lead level is normally $500 but is negotiable - correspond with Jason.
