QUESTION: How can I handle soot damage from a candle I had in my bedroom? 11/04/12 North Carolina, USA - United States of America

Can you please give me information on how to handle soot damage from a candle I had in my bedroom?

ANSWER: Apr 16 2012

Hi Rachel,

I'm not sure whether the candles you were burning had a metal wick but if so, then the soot may contain lead dust (if the metal wick was leaded). I don't know how to clean soot damage in general but it is recommended that lead dust be cleaned with sugar soap or any good detergent, and then wiped over again with clean water (to remove the lead which is bound by the detergent).

If this method does not actually remove the soot, the only other thing I can suggest is a re-paint.

I hope this helps.

Yours Sincerely

Elizabeth O'Brien
