QUESTION:
Lead and Port Pirie's pregnant women during antenatal care,
01 Aug 2006, South Australia Australia
Dear Lead organisation. I am a medical student currently undertaking a placement in Port Pirie. I'm trying to find out some information about lead poisoning in neonates in Port Pirie, South Australia. I have found articles on how to treat neonates, but I am struggling to find information about advice for pregnant women during their antenatal care. Would you please be able to direct me to useful information, Thanks Robyn |

ANSWER: 01 Aug 2006 Dear Robyn, We had a very similar enquiry from a doctor in the smelter community at La Oroya in Peru and when we asked our Technical Advisory Board for advice, our Dr Balzer referred us to Dr Bruce Lanphear who referred us to Dr Michael Shannon [ michael.shannon@childrens.harvard.edu ] who is by all accounts the best there is in managing lead poisoning during pregnancy and in newborns and he has treated around 5,000 lead poisoned children. You may also find it useful to put your query (after joining) to our Lead Point Source Communities Egroup. You can join at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/LPSCs/ and we are currently having discussions with Zinifex to set up a Port Pirie egroup and website so please keep in touch, especially if you collate some antenatal care advice so that we can discuss web-publishing or otherwise distributing it. All the best with your vital work. Yours Sincerely Elizabeth O'Brien |
