QUESTION: Lead Poisoning and Prostate cancer, 23 Feb 2006, Minnesota USA

Dear sir/madam:
I served aboard a US Navy ship. my job was in the engineering spaces where high level exposure to asbestos and other toxic chemicals such as red lead paint were used almost daily.
in 2004 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was treated at our VA Hospital, and am currently under their care.
I'm concerned about my future health issues from Asbestos, red lead paint, DDT which we were exposed to routinely and other's such as fuel oil.
I have been told there is no link between prostate cancer and any of these substances, but I am learning more and believe there is a link.
I am the first person in my family ever recorded to have any kind of cancer. I do have pulmonary difficulties and other things i deal with that may also be caused by this exposure.
Could you email me links to positive information that these chemicals can in fact be linked to prostate cancer? Any information you could email me would be greatly appreciated.
I'm doing ok--and want to keep doing ok.
Thank you in advance for your kind consideration to help me learn more about this.
Sincerely yours
Dewey R. Pihlman
ANSWER: 20 Jul 2006

Dear Dewey,
I'm sorry for the very late reply. Lead poisoning is capable of altering the reproductive function of an adult. You can check it in www.lead.org.au/fs/fst7.html
This link states that lead poisoning can cause impotence, lower sperm count, erectile dysfunction, etc. I'm sorry but I did not find any link between lead poisoning and prostate cancer. I did found that arsenic has been linked to prostate cancer ( http://orgs.unca.edu/eqi/arsenic.html ).
Regarding your respiratory problem, it may be due to asbestos as asbestosis can happen due to inhalation of asbestos dust. Asbestos dusts are too large for the immune cells in the lung (macrophage) to engulf.
I'm so sorry that you have to go through these matters. I wish you the best of luck.
Regards,
Erik Wibowo
