QUESTION:
Is giant cell Arthurism linked to lead poisoning / hydrocarbons exposure?
19 Feb 2006, New South Wales Australia
I am after information to assist in a disease that killed my father. He had giant cell arthurism a very rare blood disorder. He worked for an oil company for 30 years and during that time entered the inside of petrol tanks from over seas (with no OH&S) protection in those days. I really feel that he had lead poisoning but do not know what avenues to go to try and have this reviewed. many of his workmates that worked with him also died and most of them before they were 60 after being sick for approx 10 years with multiple blood /cancer problems can you give me any information? ANSWER: 28 Mar 2006 Dear Kerry, many apologies for the delay in getting back to you - our fully volunteer service is overwhelmed with enquiries - but when we finally put your question to Professor Chris Winder at University of New South Wales yesterday, he sent the following answer today. I hope this helps. Regards Yours Sincerely Elizabeth O'Brien, Winner of the United Nations Assoc'n of Australia (UNAA) World Environment Day (WED) Award for Outstanding Service to the Environment, 2004. Giant cells are either a form of giant cell tumor of bone that arises in malignancies, rather than transforming to malignancy; or a sarcoma characterised by large anaplastic (lacking structure or differentiation) cells. I am not aware of any links between lead and such cells. While I am not aware of any links between hydrocarbons and such cells, I consider that such a link would be more likely. If the condition is rare, then proving a link to exposure would be very difficult. Chris Winder |
