ANSWER: 24 Jun 2005 Dear Bevan, I think you get the award for the most unusual question this month. I had no idea that lead is used in sampling sugar juice. Could it not be replaced by something else? What do you do with the lead? Is it heated? Is the waste you are talking about liquid or solid? Is it large mass/volume or small mass/volume (household type volume is up to 20 litres)? When I rang the Department of Environment to ask what to do with leaded waste from a sugar mill, they said they would phone me back after lunch or by Monday at the latest. Hopefully by the time they phone I will have a better understanding of the type and amount of waste - if you can get back to me. Thanks Yours Sincerely Elizabeth O'Brien |
