QUESTION:
Risks of lead lighting for breastfeeding mothers. 07 May 2004, Victoria Australia I am currently breastfeeding my 13 month old twice a day. I am wondering about the risks of leadlighting (outside the home once a week) My Dad has asked me to use his class spot for 10 weeks while he is away. No lead products would be stored or used at home. I am also wondering about any risks once I stop breastfeeding. Thanks. |

ANSWER: 07 May 2004 Dear Madam, It is possible to do leadlighting without getting lead poisoned and it is excellent that the baby is not going to be exposed directly at all. See www.lead.org.au/fs/fs18.html and www.environment.gov.au/atmosphere/airquality/lead/stainedglass.html and to be sure, have a blood lead test after the first lesson or two. Be sure to shower and wash your hair and change your clothes after each class and before handling the baby whether the baby is breastfeeding or not. If your house is a pre-1970 house, then it is more likely that lead paint dust would be the commonest source of lead for your baby and a blood lead test for the baby is recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines. Breastfeeding is best feeding so I hope your baby will stay this lucky for a while longer. Feel free to phone 1800 626 086 if you would like to discuss the blood lead results. Yours Sincerely Elizabeth O'Brien |
