QUESTION:
Lead-free electronics in Australia... When & how?
29 Nov 2004,
Malaysia
Dear sir, Could you tell me whether there is any intention to go for lead free product in Australia. If "YES" then when will it be implemented & is it mandatory or voluntary basis? If you are not the proper contact, appreciate if you could address it to the proper channel. Glad to hear from you soonest. Cheers |

ANSWER: 01 Dec 2004 Dear Sir, To the best of my knowledge, there is currently no intention to enact legislation for 'lead free' electronics within Australia, neither for consumption nor manufacture. The only countries with legislation is The European Community, though I believe that Japan and some States in the US are bringing in rules/legislation for recycling to control disposal of electronic products. We expect that is how Australia will go some years from now. The only reason there is a movement among electronic manufacturers here and rest of the world is to be able to supply the EU in 2006. So, there is no current intention to manufacture or import lead free product in Australia. However, due to market presence or customers in the European Union, some Australian manufacturers and designers have lead free capability for export. Hence the driving forces are 'demand pull' or voluntary (not mandatory), and the schedule for requiring lead free products in Australia has not been planned. Kind regards.
