QUESTION:
The relationship between ICI and Dulux,
20 Dec 2004,
New South Wales Australia
I have come across a statement on your WWW-site to do with ceiling dust -- that's not the relevant point though. The statement was by Ms Elizabeth O'Brien and referred to the ICI Dulux site at Cabarita in Sydney. For an article which I'm currently preparing for the "Australian Dictionary of Biography", I'm concerned to know the exact details of the relationship between ICI and Dulux (originally BALM Paints). Ms O'Brien's term suggests the link which I cannot exactly pin down. Can you advise, please? Thanks.......John Carmody |

ANSWER: 20 Dec 2004 Dear John, Your subject is not by any chance John Hartley is it? Both myself and Fred Salome knew John Hartley personally and he was without a doubt the most knowledgeable man about paint in Australia. Fred and I and hundreds of other people attended his funeral in January 2001. John was a mentor to Fred and many other young industrial chemists. I'm just interested to know whether he is your subject. Cheers Elizabeth Dear John, I'm no industrial historian and the ownership of paint companies at any one time has always been one of the great mysteries to me but I did find this useful snippet on the Dulux website [www.dulux.com.au/html/about_us/index.aspx] so hopefully this answers your question: [BEGINNING OF WEB EXTRACT] Dulux History Dulux has been involved with the manufacture and marketing of paint and related systems in Australia since 1918 and is the largest manufacturer of quality paint products in Australia. Dulux Australia was a key player in the ICI Paints World Group, until in 1997 ICI PLC informed ICI Australia its intention to sell its concern in Australia. This decision lead ICI Australia to be renamed on February 2nd, 1998 as Orica Australia Limited. Dulux Today Dulux is an Orica business. Orica is an Australian company with operations around the globe. It manufactures and supplies industrial and specialty chemicals, agriculture chemicals and fertilisers, commercial explosives and mining chemicals, as well as consumer products. You can visit the Orica Website [www.orica.com/business/cor/orica/COR00254.nsf/HeadingPagesDisplay/About+Ori caCompany+Profile?OpenDocument] for information about the other Orica businesses. [END OF WEB EXTRACT] If this fails to pin down the relationship between ICI and Dulux then you could ask the President of The LEAD Group, Fred Salome, in case he knows more about it. You can phone Fred at CTI Consultants in Sydney on 02 9736 3911 or email him Fred_Salome Yours Sincerely Elizabeth O'Brien |
