I'm interested in learning more about your attic dust studies and the methodology used to clean up the contaminated area. What method was used to test arsenic, was a total metals speciation done? Thanks |

ANSWER: 22 Aug 2004 Dear Sir, Please find attached a CSIRO study by Jeff Davis and Prof Brian Gulson, entitled "Ceiling Dust: A Potential Urban Environmental Problem" (which I trust answers your questions about the method used to test arsenic and whether a total metals speciation was done), plus another study, "Assessment of Lead Exposure Associated with Ceiling Dust Removal", carried out by the New South Wales WorkCover Authority - the state authority which administers the OH&S Act. I have written to WorkCover with the following suggestions in relation to documents about methodology used for clean-up of ceiling dust: On page 11, "Assessment of Lead Exposure Associated with Ceiling Dust Removal" currently states: There are a number of guidance notes already in place, for example: * Procedures used in the Sydney Aircraft Noise Insulation Project (SANIP) * Ceiling Dust and Hail Storms (Vol7 N*2 of Lead Action News) by The Lead Group, Inc. * Management of Lead Contamination (in Draft) by the Lead Reference Centre, EPA * Code of Practice for Ceiling Dust Removal (in Draft) from Australian Dust Removalists Association (ADRA) I would suggest the following changes and phone numbers and weblinks to make the information more accessible: There are a number of guidance notes already in place, for example: * Procedures used in the Sydney Airport Noise Insulation Project (SANIP) [ph (02) 9462 1338 to ask for a copy or find other information (and possibly the ceiling dust removal procedures at some point in the future c/o Airport Noise Insulation Projects, Department of Transport and Regional Services (DOTARS) www.dotars.gov.au - go to Transport - Transport programmes- Air programmes - SANIP] * Ceiling Dust and Hail Storms (Vol7 N*2 of Lead Action News) by The LEAD Group, Inc [www.lead.org.au/lanv7n2/lanv7n2.html or phone the Lead Advisory Service Australia for a copy on 1800 626 086 or +61 2 9716 0132] * Management of Lead Contamination (in Draft) by the Lead Reference Centre, NSW EPA [Final coming soon from the NSW Environment Protection Authority and to be published on their website www.epa.nsw.gov.au and available from Pollution Line phone 131 555 or from outside NSW phone (02)9995 5000] * Code of Practice for Ceiling Dust Removal by the Australian Dust Removalists Association (ADRA) [www.adra.com.au/cop.html] * Competent Person For Ceiling Dust Removal - Course Manual by CTI Consultants [Available to course participants. Phone (02) 9736 3911 for course dates. Courses can be organised in any major Australian city.] * Lead Safe - Lead in Ceiling Dust fact sheet by the Lead Reference Centre, NSW EPA [Soon to be updated and web-published on the NSW Health Department website www.health.nsw.gov.au and currently available from Pollution Line phone 131 555 or from outside NSW phone (02) 9995 5000, or in bulk from the Better Health Centre, NSW Health Department phone (02) 98160452.] Also see the following: * "Hazard Profile for Metal Roofing" at www.workcover.nsw.gov.au/pdf/hp_roof.pdf and; * "Is There A Hidden Health Hazard In Your Roof? (in English and 16 community languages)" by Dr Andrew Wilson, on the NSW Health Dept Website of Multicultural Health Communication Service at www.mhcs.health.nsw.gov.au/health-public-affairs/mhcs/publications/5395.html [Juan - you may also be interested in the Spanish translation of this latter factsheet, at www.mhcs.health.nsw.gov.au/health-public-affairs/mhcs/pdfs/5395/BHC-5395-SPA.pdf] I hope this helps.
