QUESTION: What are the chances of getting lead into your system by wearing jewelry made of pewter?,
26 Mar 2003,
Victoria Australia Howdy, What are the chances of getting lead into your system by wearing jewelry made of pewter. I wear some necklaces and bracelets which because I'm quite active and sweat a lot lose their coating and discolour. Can I absorb lead from this source? Sincerely |

ANSWER: 19 Jun 2003 Dear Sir, the only information I have ever heard on the subject of leaded jewellery was from Prof Chris Winder at University of New South Wales who told an amazing tale of Pacific {?} islanders who wore leaded jewellery and only discovered over several generations that the people who ate the most pawpaw were the least affected by lead poisoning - probably due to the protectiveness of Vitamin C. I did a web search but could find nothing on this story. All you need do is have a blood lead test and you will know the answer in your case. You can certainly absorb lead through sweaty skin so either discard the jewellery or find out if you have an elevated blood lead level (above 10 µg/dL). It would be wonderful if you could let me know the result. Thanks Elizabeth O'Brien |
