Today in Parliament, Paul Llewellyn MLC
will ask the following question to the Minister for Environment :
In relation to the controversial
proposal by Magellan Metals Pty Ltd to ship lead carbonate through the
Port of Fremantle and to transport it through many highly populated
suburbs, I ask:
- Will the Minister impose an
additional requirement on Magellan Metals to process the lead into
solid ingot form at the mine site before transportation, to avoid
the public safety risks associated with the transportation of lead
carbonate?
- If no to (1), why not?
Paul Llewellyn says “It’s quite
unbelievable that the Environment Minister has rushed through this new
proposal to export lead through Fremantle, given that this same
company has very recently left a contaminated mess at Esperance.”
“The WA Government is still in the
process of implementing the recommendations from the Esperance Inquiry
so this new approval is premature.”
“The 2007 Esperance Inquiry found
that Magellen breached many of its commitments in relation to sampling
and dust monitoring at Esperance, so why should the public trust this
company to honour similar commitments now?”
“The Perth community has well and
truly been ambushed by this – the Greens are calling on the State
Government to urgently reign in this proposal so that it can be
reconsidered with public health and safety as the number 1
priority.”
