Sydney has an estimated 39,000 children suffering from lead poisoning,
said Elizabeth O'Brien of The LEAD Group, yet no program has been set up by the current
State Government for blood-lead level testing of at-risk groups. This contrasts with its
up to $3 million expenditure in Broken Hill, for a population of only 1600 children, said
Ms O'Brien.
"Sandra Nori, Member for Port Jackson, has called for blood-lead
level testing, and the environmental testing of pre-schools", said Ms O'Brien. (See
"Glebe and Inner City News", Nov 16, 1994)
Ms O'Brien said that Glebe was a typical inner-city area with all the
pre-requisites for a child population with high blood-lead levels - "old housing
stock, lots of renovation, old and current industrial sites and very high traffic
densities."
Ms O'Brien agreed that, in an election campaign, her comments on Ms
Nori's efforts could well be seen as an endorsement for Ms Nori's candidature.
"So be it", she said. "Apart from working incredibly
hard while on the Parliamentary Select Committee upon Lead Pollution (whose report will be
one of the first things looked at by the new Parliament), Sandra Nori has campaigned on
the third runway, heliport and bicycle track issues in Port Jackson, just to name a
few."

Sandra Nori has earned the support of environmentalists due to her
strong campaigning on environmental issues.
Elizabeth O'Brien of The (community) LEAD Group says, "Sandra has
held public meetings, and called for action on the testing of blood lead levels for
children in Glebe - an area with all the "risk factors" for childhood lead
poisoning. I commend her efforts."
"Apart from working incredibly hard while on the Parliamentary
Select Committee upon Lead Pollution (whose report will be one of the first things looked
at by the new Parliament), Sandra Nori has campaigned against the third runway, the
heliport, and reductions to the bus service to the inner city, and in support of light
rail links and bicycle tracks in Port Jackson, just to name a few."
Bob Moore of the Leichhardt Bicycle Users Group (LBUG) strongly
supports the bicycle policy just released by Labor's spokesperson on Transport, Brian
Langton. "LBUG is hopeful that the local candidate will support bicycle initiatives
in the Port Jackson area," said Mr Moore.
According to Herbert Beauchamp of the Total Environment Centre,
"If you care about the environment - clean air, clean rivers, saving the old growth
forests and wilderness - give the ALP your second preference. Labor's policies are streets
ahead of the Liberal / National Party Coalition. A conference of 50 environment groups,
held in Sydney on March 11, rated Labor well ahead of the Coalition on environmental
issues."

According to Herbert Beauchamp of the Toxic Chemicals Committee of
Total Environment Centre, "If you care about the environment - clean air, clean
rivers, saving the old growth forests and wilderness - give the ALP your second preference
after the Democrats. If you care about the environment, be aware that Labor's
policies are streets ahead of the Liberal / National Party Coalition. A conference of 65
environment groups, held in Sydney on March 11, rated the Greens and Democrats equal
first, then Labor, well ahead of the Coalition on environmental issues."
Sandra Nori deserves to be re-elected so that she can continue to fight
on a wide range of pollution issues in Port Jackson.
