Letters to
the Editor
Dec 31,
1995
Let me tell you
a little about my year. (1995). We worked hard on legislation and regulatory stuff and
just in the last month got the State Legislature to pass two bills that wed worked
on for months! One to require all health insurance policies to cover lead screening and
treatment (as well as immunisations) and another bill (our main priority) that requires
doctors, hospitals and clinics to test all children for lead poisoning.
Now were
working on the Governor to make sure she signs the bills. (The State Health Commission
doesnt like them, but they passed the legislature nearly unanimously.) We also got
the state regulations for lead abatement worker and contractor certification promulgated
this summer and they are supposed to start enforcing them tomorrow. Also, we raised enough
$ to hire a second organiser to work with me.

Once again,
your (wonderful) newsletter.
Not much is new
here since I wrote the other letter, except that we got our Governor to sign the 2 bills,
the Universal Screening bill is actually a very big thing for us. Citizen Action is
definitely on the map now with respect to lead poisoning prevention.
Hey, you do one
hot Newsletter. How do you manage to publish such a high quality and readable Newsletter
so regularly? I would hate to be a lead industry boss in Australia.
