The LEAD Group Technical Advisory Board

Sydney School of Medicine, University of Notre Dame Adjunct Associate Professor Garth Alperstein, Head of Evaluation, Medical Education Unit, Sydney School of Medicine, University of Notre Dame, Australia. Previously, Garth was a Community paediatrician in the Eastern Zone of the CSAHS (Central Sydney Area Health Service), which means he had responsibility for training paediatricians, ECHC staff, etc in Central Sydney and saw difficult cases of kids with PbB consistently above 15 µg/dL. Garth also worked in the Lead Clinic in New York for 10 years.

Australian Catholic University Professor Chris Winder - Professor of Occupational Health, Safety and Environment, Faculty of Business, Chemical safety, workplace chemical safety management. Occupational health, environmental toxicology, toxic effects of low level chemical exposures. Waste management, domestic and industrial lead assessment.

Institute for Sustainable Futures Dr. Chloë Mason has experience in applied research, consultancy, teaching, and advocacy in sustainable transport and urban development, corporate responsibility for environment, health and safety, social equity and public health.

Renal Pharmacology And Toxicology Professor Geoffrey Duggin retired from Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Clinical where he was Head of the Renal Diagnostic Laboratory and Head of the Toxicology Unit (also at the New Children's Hospital, Westmead). He is happy to talk directly to lead poisoned adults who are concerned about their reproductive health, or to talk to their doctor.

University of Newcastle Conjoint Prof. Graham Vimpani is head of the discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Newcastle, Australia.

CTI Consultants Pty Ltd Fred Salome - Fred has extensive knowledge of lead paint coatings and is a concrete and coatings specialist. He is Managing Director of CTI Consultants Pty Ltd who perform assessments for lead and a number of other environmental health hazards. As of October 2000, lead assessments can include on-site analysis of lead and other heavy metals using XRF.

CTI Consultants Pty Ltd Carol Bodle - Carol is a director of CTI and has several years of experience at carrying out lead assessment in homes. As of October 2000, lead assessments can include on-site lead analysis by XRF, she is experienced in OH&S assessments for a range of toxics and has been involved in setting up training courses for painters and managers in lead paint management, and for cavity dust removalists and managers.

Studio Glass  Dr. Marc Grunseit  Marc is an accomplished studio glass artist and ex GP who can give advice on professional, hobby & artist safety including lead lighting.

Graduate School of the Environment (GSE)   Professor  Brian Gulson - Interests include environmental science especially environmental health including; biokinetics of lead in human pregnancy, toxic metals in mining and urban environments (impact on environment and humans, sources and pathways, remedial actions, risk assessment), radiogenic isotope methods in environmental monitoring, lead paint management, dietary intake of metals, pharmacokinetic modelling, forensic science.

Professor Mark P Taylor - Professor Mark P Taylor Environmental Science, Faculty of Science, Macquarie University. Main area of research, teaching and consulting interest is in environmental health - both natural and urban systems. Professor Taylor's active research interests include environmental metal exposures, sources and pathways, risks and treatment of related problems. Mark has significant experience of sampling, testing for environmental lead in natural systems (river sediments and water, soils, dust, air etc) as well as in human environments (houses and gardens). Mark has written numerous articles covering environmental lead and other metals and their associated risks. He has also worked on toxic cases in a range of Australian mining and urban locations relating to lead (and other metal) exposure. He also has worked as Commissioner of the NSW Land and Environment Court and has a well-developed working knowledge of environmental legislation and policy.

Elizabeth O'Brien Elizabeth O’Brien heads up a small Australia-based NGO (The LEAD Group Inc.) that devotes most of its shoestring resources to providing information and advice about the prevention and management of lead poisoning to concerned citizens from across the globe.

Michelle Calvert local government. Michelle was a Councillor on Ashfield Council, and advised Ashfield and other councils and organisations about lead problems, from her own personal experience.

Robin Mosman, met on a number of occasions with residents, representatives of two local environment groups, staff of the Lake Macquarie Remediation Centre; the director of the Hunter Public Health Unit (PHU); and the EPA, regularly attending meetings of the Lake Macquarie Environmental Health Liaison Committee. Also undertook a community advocacy role between some residents and the various government agencies.

Dr Ian IrvineIan has been an environmental scientist for the past thirty years, and is an expert in the investigation assessment and management of contaminated sediments, a major global environmental problem. He has written, edited or contributed to several hundred scientific reports, articles, environmental impact studies and other investigations, mainly dealing with contamination in the marine and coastal environment, but mainly writes novels these days.

Theresa Gordon North Lakes Environmental Action Defence (No Lead),  point source community advocacy, international campaigning, lobbying at all levels of government, addressing conferences and community groups in an effort to force Pasminco Boolaroo smelter, to end its harmful practices and take responsibility for remediation

Dr. Kate Hughes - Dr. Kate Hughes has written books, fact sheets, and lecture notes on various toxics issues and especially pesticides, she worked as an environmental consultant for the Olympics 2000 Homebush Bay site.

Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki - Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki is one of Australia's best known medical & scientific commentators, has 3% of Australia's listening audience on JJJ (ABC national radio) each week plus numerous other media spots. He is the author of more than a dozen books about fascinating medical and scientific facts. He is especially interested in leaded petrol.

National Toxics Network Dr. Mariann Lloyd-Smith - Mariann is co-founder and senior advisor to the National Toxics Network, as well as being the Northern Co-Chair, International POPs [Persistent Organic Pollutants] Eliminination Network (IPEN) [ http://www.ipen.org/ipenweb/ipen/steering.html ].

Faculty of Media, Society & Culture, Professor Peter Newman - John Curtin Distinguished Professor, Curtin Sustainability Policy Institute, Faculty of Humanities, Humanities Research & Graduate Studies, Curtin University of Technology, Perth WA and previously Director of the Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy (ISTP), at Murdoch University. Peter was also Chair of the Western Australian Sustainability Roundtable advising the Premier on how to implement the State Sustainability Strategy. Peter has authored several books and numerous articles including "Pollution And The Poor" "Automobile Dependence - "The Irresistible Force"?", "Sustainability And Cities."

Veterinary Pharmacology Dr. Jill Maddison - Jill's clinical research interests include lead toxicity in cats, treatment of lymphosarcoma in dogs and cats, adverse drug reactions in domestic animals, the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy and medication compliance in veterinary medicine.

Holistic Vet & Bird Specialist Dr. Ross Perry - Ross is a holistic bird vet in Sydney. An established Sydney bird vet with years of experience. Ross graduated in 1972 and runs a small animal practice caring for pet birds, cats, dogs, cavies, rabbits, ferrets, rats, mice, reptiles, and fish. Ross served as Dial-A-Vet on radio 2GB for three years and appeared on many animal hospital TV programmes. Ross offers holistic and allopathic health management and is interested in the use of nutraceuticals to help restore and maintain good health and wellbeing.

General Practice, Central Clinical School, Sydney University  Professor Michael Mira - Michael has had an interest in lead poisoning since the death of his dog in 1989 from plumbism. He has done the major blood lead survey of Sydney pre-schoolers, published in 1996, and been involved with most other Sydney surveys. In 1999-2000, while still the head of Central Sydney Division of General Practice (CSDGP), he researched the usefulness of academic detailing for GPs in inner Sydney by informed consumers ie parents of lead poisoned children who are members of The LEAD Group

Sustainable House Michael Mobbs has held an interest in sustainable design for over 20 years, advising about technology, design, environmental law and policy to government, the private sector and community groups.

Australian National University Emeritus Professor Val Brown AO - Visiting Professor Researcher - Human ecology & urban environment. Val Brown holds an undergraduate degree in the Biological Sciences with a major in Ecology, a graduate diploma in Adult Learning, and the inaugural PhD in ANU's Human Sciences. Her thesis examined the potential for integrating the Arts and Sciences in exploring environmental issues. Val researches and lectures on environment and consumer issues, and has been a long-term campaigner on lead issues.

Beverley Hills Practice Dr. Ben Balzer - General Practitioner has special interests in nutrition, the omega lipids and lead pollution.

Jack Haley  - Manager, Vehicle Safety and Environment NRMA,  Australian New Car Assessment.

Dr.John Wlodarczyk is a trained economist and statistician now operating his own consultancy business in statistical design / analysis and health economics, and sometimes working in environmental health eg for Broken Hill or NSW Health.

Graeme Waller Lead assessor provides lead testing and analytical services in Boolaroo, testing children’s shed baby teeth for lead, pathology, environmental assessment

Rosemary Ayoub Rosemary's son Jack was lead poisoned during renovations of their home which included Jack being exposed to ceiling dust. He appeared in an article in the local paper. Rosemary joined The LEAD Group's Committee in early 1999 and the Technical Advisory Board in 2000 as she is an early childhood educator with TAFE who has worked very hard to raise awareness about lead. Similarly, Rosemary has worked hard to raise lead awareness among councillors and staff at Botany Bay Council. Rosemary joined The LEAD Group's Council Lead Project (CLP) Steering Committee enthusiastically, in time for the start of the Project in February 2001. She has since had 3 more children and had to live with the threat of ongoing lead exposure due to renovations of old houses in her area. She continues to lobby Council to further develop and enforce safe lead management practices."

Occupational Knowledge International Dr. Perry Gottesfeld,  Occupational Knowledge International works to build capacity in developing countries to identify, monitor, and mitigate environmental and occupational exposures to hazardous materials in order to protect public health and the environment. The organization provides technical assistance through partnerships, training, and environmental audit and certification programs, with a commitment to public health tenets, scientific principles and corporate responsibility.

King Abdulaziz University Hospital Dr. Fatma Zahrani  Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia who is involved in research on lead levels and poisoning among Saudi children. She has reviewed many articles and devised a plan to conduct primary screening for both the general population and those at risk.

RECLES Reducing Childhood exposure to lead study  Professor Clement Adebamowo, BMChB Hons(Jos), FWACS, FACS, DSc (Harvard), Professor of Surgery and Honorary Consultant Surgeon; Director, Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria; Director, Center for Bioethics, Ibadan, Nigeria; Chairman, National Health Research Ethics Committee of Nigeria (NHREC). Clement's work in lead exposure research is centered around the chronic exosure of children to low levels of lead. Working with the research team that includes Professor Sridhar - Professor of Environmental Health, Professor Agbede of Civil Engineering, Architect E. O Adebamowo and others, Clement is studying the amount of lead in the domestic environment and the impact of this on the neurobehavioral characteristics of children. So far, the team have conducted environmental lead level surveys, knowledge, attitude and practice to lead studies, and are proceeding to additional studies on intrauterine exposure to lead, umbilical cord blood lead levels and the lead levels in children in schools and day care centers.

Dr. Godofredo Arauzo is a Peruvian physician and surgeon, second speciality: Gynaecology and Obstetrics; Masters in Medicine, Environment Researcher, lecturer, more than 50 works done on Medicine and Environment, Associated Member of the Peruvian Academy of Medicine, Member of the Peruvian Association of Perinatology, member of the Peruvian Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Associate Member of the Peruvian Society of Sexology, Active Member of the Peruvian Society of Arterial Hypertension, Founding Member of the Peruvian Society for the Study of Obesity and Arteriosclerosis, Associate Member of the Peruvian Society of Epidemiology, Corresponding Member of the Peruvian Climacteric Society and Member of the International Menopause Society.
[Dr. Arauzo's special interest is in the 35,000 lead poisoned people in the Doe Run lead smelter community of La Oroya. He writes:] "La Oroya is a living laboratory; people who live there are not only lead contaminated, but with the other 20 metals that are there refined, as well: it is an ongoing in vivo experiment."

Isla MacGregor works with the Toxic Heavy Metals Taskforce Tasmania and the Tasmanian Public and Environmental Health Network as a Researcher and Advocate. Her key areas of interest are in policy development in Mining, Contaminated Sites and human and environmental health risk assessment.

Jamie Wood is a Senior Environmental Scientist and Company Director of Environmental Health Services (Tas) Pty Ltd, a trading name of Sustainable Environmental Assessment and Management (SEAM). He holds 3 degrees including a Master of Environmental Studies from the University of Tasmania. His thesis was an Environmental Examination of sediments in Lindisfarne Bay, Hobart Tasmania. This work involved looking at heavy metal concentrations (Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu) in sediments and the implications to the marine environment from any dredging. He was mentored by the late Professor Harry Bloom, the man best known for blowing the whistle on heavy metals contamination of the Derwent Estuary from the zinc smelter.
In 2009, Jamie presented workshops across Australia for EnHealth on their guidelines and standards. One significant issue involved lead in the environment and a number of case studies of lead poisoning were presented and discussed at the 14 workshops in each state and territory.
He currently contracts services to a number of local Councils on a range of environmental health issues.

Monash University Dr Gavin Mudd is a Senior Lecturer and Course Director for Environmental Engineering at Monash University. His research focuses on the sustainability of modern mining - examining aspects such as trends in economic mineral resources, declining ore grades, increasing mine waste (tailings plus waste rock), pollution releases from mining, acid mine drainage, mine rehabilitation and corporate governance and sustainability reporting. Gavin is always happy to help locals and communities address the environmental aspects of mining and he has provided loads of info on Australian lead mining and exploration to The LEAD Group! For example, in LEAD Action News vol 12 no 3.
