As well as the focus
in the transition economy being on mass transit vehicles and renewable
energy, reduced air travel and vehicle kilometres travelled (VKT) per person
and reduced consumerism generally (growing your own organic food or buying
locally grown food) will be the order of the day. This is an
intergenerational equity and an environmental justice issue: on one hand
about using up finite resources by making more motor vehicles until there’s
no more oil to run the extractive and manufacturing industries, or the
vehicles; and on the other, by leaving a planet for future generations which
is littered with lead pollution and dead motor vehicles.
