and many wealthy people at the time used lead-based sugar compounds to
sweeten their wine. The pencils Beethoven used would have been true lead
pencils (not graphite). As his hearing worsened he would hold one end of a
pencil in his mouth and rest the other end on the piano to “hear” the music
being played.
