By Kay Seltitzas, Marsha Stejskal, Huw Carson, Dr David Leaman and Isla MacGregor, Toxic Heavy Metals Taskforce Tasmania (THMTT)
“Rosebery is a town on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia. It is situated at the northern end of the West Coast Range, in the shadow of Mount Black and adjacent to the Pieman River now Lake Pieman. It lies on the Murchison Highway, 25 kilometres north east of Zeehan and is part of the Municipality of West Coast Council. At the 2006 census, Rosebury had a population of 1,032”
The small west coast mining town of Rosebery has become the focus for the most critical and important public health and environmental regulation issue in Tasmania's recent history.
In October 2008 several Rosebery residents realised that their chronic health problems and those of their pets was probably caused by the effects of toxic heavy metals in the environment. This realisation has led to one of the most appalling cases of Government mismanagement of a public health crisis in Tasmania to date.
