CSIRO Geological Services can assess ceiling dust or vacuum cleaner dust, either sampled by CSIRO or the client, for lead, arsenic, cadmium, copper, chromium, mercury, and zinc. Other assessments that can be done are size analysis of particles, basic optical and/or scanning electron microscopy for lead bearing particles, and lead testing of paint particles. Results approximately four weeks from receipt of sample. Samples of dust should be collected with a clean plastic spoon, scrape 3-4 teaspoons into a "new" plastic bag. Do not collect any roof insulation in the sample.

NATA accredited for analysis of lead (and other elements) in waters (trade wastes), chemicals (metallic coatings and treatment solutions), laboratory reagents (pharmaceutical ingredients), etc. APS advised the Lead Advisory Service of their lead analysis service in May 1999, in response to the ceiling dust issue in the hail damage area of Eastern Sydney in April 1999. Contact APS for a prompt lead analysis of ceiling dusts costing $34 per sample reducing by 30% for more than 10 samples submitted at once. The usual turn around time is 10 working days. A flat fee of $34 / sample applies to urgent samples with a 48 hour turnaround time. In mid 2001, there was doubt as to whether APS would analyse samples for the public.

Samples can be delivered to the lab between 9-4:30 weekdays or posted to PO Box 162 Lidcombe 2141, Less than 10 samples will cost $40 each and if total is less than $100, a cheque made out to "Division of Analytical Laboratories" must accompany the samples. Larger amounts will be billed.
As of June 2005, Lidcombe lab is now offering tooth lead testing to the public. The cost is $40 per tooth, aim is one week turnaround, there is no interpretive report, no identification of the tooth by a dentist and no guarantee that the lead is not on the outside of the tooth due to contamination in storage or transit. The Lidcombe lab was used for tooth lead assays in the PhD thesis on lead in children's teeth in Broken Hill by Monish Arora.

It consists of 8 sample containers which you can use for any combination of sample types though a good combination if you do not have a drinking water tank is 2 floor dust wipes and 2 window sill dust wipe for testing those areas of most concern (e.g. child play area), 2 soil samples, one house paint sample and one toy paint sample (especially if the child chews paint off an old or imported toy).
